Left unchecked, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) will roll back a century of medical progress, damage the environment, interrupt food production, cause more people to fall into extreme poverty and imperial global health security. Furthermore, the World Bank estimates that its impact on economic growth will be greater than that of the 2009 financial crisis, putting at risk up to US$ 100 trillion of economic output by 2050.
Thus, TYHDO found it useful to run a campaign named EPUKA USUGU, EPUKA USUMBUFU and adopt the theme “Preventing antimicrobial resistance together” in its campaign where a uniform content was developed in a layman language to aid campaign ambassadors sending the message to the civil society in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar hence raising awareness on this growing pandemic.
The campaign was conducted in different modalities to ensure the intended message on antimicrobial resistance is
reached to the targeted group of people. Such Modalities included;
● Visiting academic institutions (Primary schools, Secondary schools, Colleges, Universities).
●Community reach outs in their localities (Boda-bodas drivers, Daladala Drivers, market places).
● Extensive use of mass media such as visiting radio stations and TV stations, Newspaper publications to deliver awareness to society on antimicrobial resistance and detailed use of social media such as Instagram, Twitter and WhatsApp of the association to deliver messages.
● Visiting religious congregations such as Church fellowships and Mosque Sessions to deliver message on antimicrobial resistance and
.
● Establishing essay competitions among university and college students to build capacity on antimicrobial awareness and stewardship
